Unlike most chewing bones, HealthyMouthTM is safe and gentle enough for a kitten. It's never too early to practice preventive dental care. Petsmile's professional toothpaste is accepted with VOHC and has been shown to prevent plaque and tartar build-up. The daily use of a toothpaste or gel for felines is a cat's best defense against periodontal disease.
Even if only applied to a pet's teeth and gums with your finger, a veterinary-approved toothpaste can be beneficial. It doesn't work as well as brushing your teeth, but it works better than not doing it at all, said veterinarian Andrea Moore, medical director of the VCA Pinnacle Animal Hospital in San Jose, California. Petsmile Professional toothpaste is one of only two that are accepted with VOHC for plaque prevention. Its active ingredient, a patented formula called Calprox, has been shown to inhibit plaque and tartar buildup and gently dissolve the bacteria-rich biofilm that forms naturally on the surface of the teeth.
Petsmile toothpaste is hypoallergenic and contains calcium, magnesium and phosphates, minerals that help increase the strength of tooth enamel. It also contains potassium hydroxide, which neutralizes acidity to prevent tooth decay, and cetylpyridinium chloride, which fights germs. The formula is of human quality and does not contain BPA, silica, sulfates or parabens. Petsmile was a little more watery and messy than some of the other brands we tested, but it clung to both a finger and a toothbrush.
It was also one of the two most expensive toothpastes we considered, but since it's one of only two that VOHC has confirmed its effectiveness, it's well worth the additional cost. The 4.5-ounce tube holds up to six months. The pet toothbrush is just the right size to clean the nooks and crannies of a cat's mouth.
